Roadside Heritage Project: Researchers shed light on Eastern Sierra-395 corridor

Many northern Nevadans make the trek down Highway 395 heading to Southern California, whether for business or for pleasure. Passing by Topaz and Mono Lakes and through Bishop and Lone Pine, many admire the beauty of the area, but few know and appreciate the science and history behind it. The University of Nevada, Reno has teamed up with locals and other partners to shed new light on this fascinating area, just a few hours’ drive from Reno. (click here for full story)

For more information about the Roadside Heritage Project please visit: www.roadsideheritage.org

We recently had the opportunity to work with John Tyson and Brent Boynton from KOLO 8 TV on some stories related to our NSF-funded Roadside Heritage Project.  These programs are being aired on KOLO 8 News on Thursdays at 5:00. If you haven’t seen them and are interested, you can view them on the KOLO 8 TV website.  Once you go to their link (http://www.kolotv.com/), look at the upper right side of the screen and you will see a collection of videos under the Hot Topics label.  Scroll to the right and you will see three Roadside Heritage segments that came out of our interviews with the KOLO 8 TV interviews.  There will a new video posted weekly through the month of May.

Walker Basin Project Report Completed

Following two years of intensive research in the Walker Basin, scientists from UNR and DRI have completed a major report that examines options for restoring Walker Lake, while maintaining the Basin's ecology and economy.  UNR and DRI scientists, engineers, technicians, graduate and undergraduate students, and support staff have worked to produce the best information possible, so it can be used to inform decisions regarding acquisition of water rights from willing sellers. COMING UP:

Reserve a plot at the EnAcT garden today!

UNR students can rent a plot of dirt and have their own farm this summer! Students are currently planting their seedlings but you can get a plot at any time this summer because there are still plots available to rent. Plots already have plumbing and the sooner you reserve your plot the more free veggies to choose from. You will have your pick of tomatoes, peppers, herbs, greens, and other plants that we have started in the green house. If you are a student and interested in growing a crop at the EnAcT farm this summer, send an e-mail to majewski@unr.nevada.edu to reserve your plot.
