Program description: Elementary Education Upon completion of the approved program of study (128 credits) and other program requirements, Elementary Education majors earn a Bachelor of Science degree. Students become eligible for a teaching credential for grades K-8, issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
The Elementary Education program includes a requirement for students to complete at least 3 credits in Life Sciences, 3 credits in Earth Sciences, and 6 credits in Physical Sciences. Elementary Education pre-service students and licensed teachers also take a course in teaching science, which includes projects that relate to environmental studies. Secondary Education The initial licensure programs in secondary education prepare individuals to teach grades 7-12 in a specific content area in the State of Nevada. Upon completion of the 128-credit program, students will earn a Bachelor of Science or Arts (depending on the content area) in Secondary Education. The program focuses on developing competency in the following areas: Knowledge of Students, Knowledge of Subject Matter and planning, Delivery and Management of Instruction, Knowledge and use of assessment and Professionalism. It is a field-based program, which enables students to be observing in schools in the area while preparing for their 16-week internship (student teaching) semester.
Graduates of the program, whether BA or BS, will possess:
- A strong liberal arts education with emphasis in a particular academic discipline
- Foundational knowledge of education
- Methods of instruction appropriate to secondary education
- Background in educational psychology and human development
- Methods for educating culturally diverse and special needs populations
- Knowledge of educational technology applicable to secondary education
- Public school teaching experience
Upon completion of the approved program of study (128 credits) and other program requirements, Secondary Education majors earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Students become eligible for a teaching credential for grades 7-12 in a particular teaching major, issued by the Nevada Department of Education. Some of the majors have an environmental focus such as: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Science and minors such as Geography and Geology.
