Program description: The English department offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with an emphasis on Literature and the Environment. Advanced courses are taught on topics ranging from Pre-Thoreauvian nature writing to ecocriticism and theory. In addition, many sections of freshman and advanced composition, and a few introductory literature courses are taught in the area of Literature and Environment by graduate fellows and faculty members. Presently, the program is in the process of developing an experiential element in the curriculum, and is working to incorporate such diverse elements as creative writing, environmental activism, and interdisciplinary into the study of environmental literature.
