Program description: The geosciences have been at UNR for over 100 years with the first Professor of Geology and Mineralogy appointed in 1900. A consequence of a century plus of teaching and research has resulted in a unique and diverse department both in degree offerings and research expertise. Five degrees are offered at the M.S. and Ph.D. level: geology, geophysics, geological engineering, geochemistry, and hydrogeology. The unique perspective the department is reflected in its research and specialized laboratories. Our mission is to serve the people of Nevada through applying knowledge and professional values in the earth sciences and engineering. The Department develops professionals and educated citizens capable of meeting society's needs with regard to the earth, including scientific studies, education, environmentally sustainable resource discovery and development, natural hazards assessment and mitigation.
