Program description: The Mathematics Department offers an M.S. degree, with options in basic mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. Teaching is by no means the only career opportunity open to math majors. Mathematics is a diverse subject, which has applications in many endeavors. It is a foundation and significant component of engineering and the sciences - and it also has important applications in business and industry. A mathematics major provides a solid background for actuarial science, computer careers, professional schools, and graduate study as well as teaching. A degree in statistics will come with numerous opportunities to gain experience in statistical consulting for a huge spectrum of endeavors from the social sciences to the hard sciences and work with scientists from the Desert research institute. This can come in the form of looking at data, designing experiments to collect data, and building stochastic (i.e. random) models that reflect empirically observed probability distributions and known mechanisms of interaction.
